What are Charis Community Church's Beliefs?

At Charis Community Church, we believe that a clear and reasonable expression of our faith was recently authored and presented at the 2007 Gospel Coalition Conference as the Gospel Coalition's Confessional Statement.  This confession will be an aid to us in times of controversy, a confirmation of our faith, and a means of building us up towards Christ-likeness in helping us understand the riches of God’s grace and truth revealed to us through the Holy Scriptures.

What does Charis believe about the Bible?

We believe the whole Bible is true.  In fact, we believe the Bible is our final authority in judging what exactly is right and true.  We believe the God has spoken to man through Scripture, revealing, among other things, who He is, who we are, why He created us, and how we can know Him.  The Bible is our final authority on how we are to live the lives He's given us.  (Deut. 29:29; John 17:17; Ps. 19:7-11; 2 Tim. 3:16) Return to Top

What does Charis believe about God?

We believe that God has existed eternally as Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  We believe that because He has always existed as a community within Himself, He has never been in need of anyone or anything, but rather has always been infinitely satsified within Himself.  He therefore created out of His fullness, not out of His need.  We believe the Father, Son, and Spirit are equal in all attributes and perfections, while at time differing in function.  (Matt. 28:19; John 17:5,24; John 5:18; Deut. 6:4) Return to Top

What does Charis believe about Jesus?

We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God.  We believe He became fully human while never ceasing to be fully God.  We believe He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  We believe that Jesus lived a sinless life on earth.  We believe that Jesus secured our redemption through His death on the cross where He became our substitute, suffering the judgment of God in our place.  We believe He rose bodily in victory three days after dying for our sin, thereby securing our justification.  We believe He ascended to the right hand of the Father where He acts on our behalf as our Advocate and Intercessor.  We believe that Jesus is coming again as Judge.  (John 1:1,2,14; Romans 3:24; Gal. 3:14, 2 Cor. 5:21, Col. 2:13-15, 1 Cor. 15:3-8, 2 Tim. 4:1; 1 Peter 4:5) Return to Top

What does Charis believe about the Holy Spirit?

We believe the Holy Spirit has been sent by the Father and the Son to convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.  We believe the Holy Spirit to be the manifest presence of God in the life of believers, empowering them to live lives pleasing to God.  We believe the Holy Spirit acts as God's regenerating agent in the hearts of believers, baptizing them into the Body of Christ, and sealing them for the day of redemption.  (John 16:8-15; John 3:5-8; Eph. 1:13,14; Romans 8:9,13; Eph. 5:18; 1 Cor. 12:13) Return to Top

What does Charis believe about Mankind?

We believe that although God originally created man perfect and without sin, through the fall of Adam all of mankind has inherited a sinful and corrupt nature.  Through Adam's sin, we have been separated from God, worthy of God's judgment, and unable to remedy our lost condition ourselves.  We are all in need of the Savior, Jesus Christ.  (Gen. 1:26,31; Gen 3:1-13; Eph. 2:1-3; 1 Tim. 1:15,16) Return to Top

What does Charis believe about Salvation?

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace from God and only received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed for the forgiveness of our sins.  We believe the accomplishment of our salvation to be entirely of God.  We believe God purposed salvation for all who believe, and now works in all who believe to bring salvation to its certain completion, which is perfection and glory in the everlasting presence of God.  (Phil. 1:6, 3:12; Col. 1:27-29; Gal. 2:19-20; Eph. 2:8-10; John 1:12; Eph. 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 2 Tim. 1:9,10; 1 Cor. 15:3,4; Romans 5:10; 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 5:13,14; Isaiah 53:5,6; Eph. 2:8,9; 2 Tim. 2:25; Romans 8:30) Return to Top
